Join us for an intensive 3-day portrait drawing workshop led by a renowned academic artist, celebrated for their classical approach and exceptional teaching. This workshop is ideal for artists of all levels who want to deepen their understanding of portraiture through structured, hands-on sessions and personalized guidance.

Workshop Overview

Over the course of 6 focused sessions, participants will explore the foundational principles and refined techniques behind effective portrait drawing. Working from live models and reference materials, you will gain a deeper appreciation for structure, proportion, light, and expression.

Program

Day 1

First quick portrait: Foundations of the Portrait

Session 1: Introduction to Head Structure and Proportion
Session 2: Blocking in the Portrait – Shape, Line, and Angle

Day 2

Second portrait (4 sessions -  Day 2-3) Refining the Likeness

Session 3: Anatomy of the Face – Planes and Volumes
Session 4: Capturing Likeness and Expression

Day 3

Light, Tone, and Finish

Session 5: Understanding Light and Shadow in Portraiture
Session 6: Final – Bringing It All Together


Throughout the workshop, the instructor will offer demonstrations, critiques, and one-on-one feedback, helping each student refine their technique and artistic voice.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10.00 to 17:00
Lunch break from 13:00 to 14:00

Materials

I want everyone to be creative in their work and choose one of three possibilities: 

  • Graphite with wet sauce drawing
  • Graphite drawing with toning
  • Charcoal

Smooth paper without texture (recommended size for drawing from 40/50 to 50/60 cm). The aspect ratio of the sides of your drawing can be different: more square or rectangular. Will depend on your composition.
Sketchbook

Tools

  • Graphite pencils B-8B or charcoal pencils (not vine or willow charcoal)
  • Soft brushes (for wet sauce technique)
  • Erasers Brand: Milan, Koh-I-Noor (with elephant) or your favorite 
    pencil eraser

Ivan Loginov

Ivan Loginov (b. 1994) is Abakan (South Siberia), Russia.

He began his carrier at the age of 15 in Sankt-Petersburg. From early age he developed passion for classical representational art. 

Most of his time he dedicated to study principles of classical Russian painting in Imperial Academy of Arts which has unbroken tradition since 1757. In his studies, he focused not only on technical aspects of painting but also on philosophy. He aims for the balance between inner and outer beauty of human portrait. His success comes from deep understanding of classical school of thought in painting and drawing. He strives to combine and overlap all his skills in order to achieve an accurate representation of human soul. 

He likes to implement and play with contrasts in color, technique and ideas. Therefore, even in his large scale history paintings one must find clear massages of present issues in society.
