Fundamentals: Head Sculpting with Philip Prinz

In this workshop, you will learn the basics of sculpting heads. This includes basic proportions, skull structure, and facial features. The goal of the workshop is for you to learn how the elements of a head fit together threedimensionally. The workshop is highly suitable as a complement to portrait drawing and will help you improve your drawings and paintings and will help you understand of spatial distances in photo references.

Schedule

The workshop consists of a total of 12 hours, divided into 3-hour blocks with breaks in between.

Saturday
10:00 am - 1:00 pm
2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Sunday
10:00 am - 1:00 pm
2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Program

  • Preparation and basic tools
  • Division and proportion of the head
  • Modeling a Loomis head
  • Modeling a simple skull
  • Modeling eyes, nose, mouth, and ears
  • Modeling a head from reference or imagination

Materials

You will be provided with a piece of Monster Clay, approximately the size of an apple, and an armature.

Please bring the following tools:

  • Simple modeling tools made of wood and/or metal
  • Loops and rakes
  • An old bread knife or box cutter

Optional

  • A small desk lamp or clamp lamp
  • Aluminum foil
  • A small mirror

We will continue to use the Monster Clay throughout the workshop and will not keep previous sculptures. If you wish to keep each sculpture, please bring additional clay, such as Monster Clay Medium or Super Sculpey.

Philip has 20 year experience as a web designer and illustrator. In the beginning he was self taught but after taking his first drawing and painting classes with Ivan Dimov he quickly realised the importance of a good art instructor. Later he studied online and onsite at the Watts Atelier in California, USA.
