A Structural Approach to Anatomy with Brian Knox

Join instructor Brian Knox for a 3-day anatomical exploration of the human figure.

This workshop will focus on how to layer and design anatomy on top of a strong gesture and basic shapes. Handouts will be included that show Brian’s step by step process and how he designs anatomy for each part of the body. Each day will include two instructor demonstrations with the remaining time devoted to one on one instruction with students. Emphasis on how to add anatomy to a drawing without disrupting the flow of the gesture.

Gesture of the figure
Structure of the figure
How to use basic shapes
Full anatomical breakdowns
How to use anatomy to create depth in a drawing
Simplified anatomy based on body type.

Schedule

Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10.00 to 17:00
Lunch break from 13:00 to 14:00

Program

Each session will start with an instructor demonstration followed by individualized instruction as students work on their own drawings. Handouts, photo reference, and models will be utilized.

Day 1

Session 1: Meet and greet. Front anatomy demo followed by student drawing (gesture, structure, anatomy)
Session 2: Back anatomy demo followed by students drawing (gesture, structure, anatomy)

Day 2

Session 1: Anatomy demo followed by student drawing (w/model)
Session 2: Anatomy demo followed by student drawing (w/model)

Day 3

Session 1: Anatomy demo followed by student drawing (w/model)
Session 2: Anatomy demo followed by student drawing (w/model)

Materials

Instructor demonstrations will be done with Wolff’s Carbon 6B charcoal pencil and a kneaded eraser on smooth newsprint in A2 (18x24"). Students are welcome to use either charcoal or graphite with their preferred paper. Note: Rough newsprint is not recommended.
